I was petting my cat and his tail feels like there is a bone poking out of it and any time I try to look at it or feel it he freaks out. I'm not sure what I should do

I would have Burt checked out by the vet. It is possible he could have suffered an injury to his tail causing it to be painful and may actually have a broken bone. A physical exam and x-rays can be done to see if any trauma has been done to his tail, and the vet can suggest treatment based on the findings of the physical exam and x-rays.

Your kitty likely either was hit by a car or got his tail caught under the wheel of a car and shot off severing the tail bones from the hip. Please take him to a veterinarian for some xrays and pain medicine and treatment as indicated by the clinical exam results.
