Why are my dog's gums turning white? Is it serious or normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 2 years and 8 months old | 58 lbs

My dog is a 2year old lab mix and I've been noticing that her gums go from pink to white throughout the day and I don't want to take her to the vet because I recently got laid off and I'm tight with money at the moment

White gums can be a sign of anemia or low red blood cells, dehydration, extreme pain or shock. While these conditions are serious, in general I would expect other signs as well. If Xena is her usual self I wouldn't be particularly concerned about her gum color. If she is lethargic, has a decreased appetite, or is vomiting or having diarrhea I'd recommend seeing a veterinarian if at all possible.

Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach to address your concern! I am concerned with Bonnie's gums being white. With her symptoms of being tired / slow and being inappetant, I would strongly suggest having her examined by a veterinarian and having her blood tested. Her pale gums could indicate that her red blood cells are low and there may be something such as a systemic disease or infection causing all of this. If she is older, there is also the possibility that something malignant such as cancer is going on. It would be best to have her checked out by a veterinarian sooner rather than later. I hope she begins to feel better soon! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.
