My dog had a grass seed removed from his nose. Why is he licking paws?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | unneutered | 7 years old | 11 lbs

Dear Kind Vet, Norbit Precious Francis came in tonight sneezing after a quick investigation by myself I discovered a grass seed lodged firmly up his nasal passage. I managed to get hold of it and pull it out. It was stuck up quite a way and was not easily taken out. Norbit is now licking his paws which I also checked for seeds. I am assuming this was painful and he didn't whimper at all no Yelp zip. Just licking paws continually. Should I take him out o a vet tomorrow he seems okay.

If the licking continues tomorrow (when I'm assuming your vet will be open) I would take Norbit in. He may be having an allergic reaction to a plant he encountered on his walk, or as you suspect there could be a grass seed lodged between his toes. If he's not licking tomorrow then chances are he will be fine.
