Is a firm or bouncy tummy normal for a kitten after diarrhea?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 6 months and 11 days old | 8.3 lbs

My six-month-old kitten got into the garbage a couple weeks ago. He had diarrhea and eventually passed some items. Our vet wasn't available, so one vet put him on a pill to firm up his poop. When he stopped his pills, the diarrhea started again. Our vet put him on a probiotic gel and told us to add rice water to his wet food. He's pooping and peeing fine, but I'm worried his tummy is more firm and bouncy than normal. Is that normal for something like this? We're weaning him off the rice water.

I don't think I'd worry too much about the firm/bouncy tummy just yet. I wouldn't say it's completely normal, but as long as Ralph is doing well otherwise (no vomiting or diarrhea, normal appetite) I'd probably wait and see how he does. If any concerning signs develop, call Ralph's vet to discuss
