My dog has small pink hot spots on his rear, mostly on his hips, but one on his stomach. What can cause these and how can I help relieve them at home until I'm able to take him to a vet?

Poor Maverick! Hot spots are usually caused by a bacterial skin infection called Staph dermatitis, although a fungal infection like ringworm could also cause similar looking lesions. The infection is usually due to an underlying skin problem such as allergies. He does need to see a vet as soon as you are able to take him, since he will likely need prescription antibiotics and a short-term steroid or other anti-inflammatory to treat this problem effectively. In the meantime, you could try bathing him in an aloe and oatmeal shampoo to help soothe the skin and temporarily make him more comfortable. If he is chewing at the spots, you may also need to get an e-collar (plastic cone) for him to wear so that he doesn't make things worse until you can see the vet.
