My cat isn't eating or pooping after spay. Should I be worried?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 8 lbs

My cat was spayed on Monday. She isn't eating well, no bowel movement since then. Her nose is stuffy and her eye is watering. I used a warm wash cloth against her nose. I've tried several foods. I fed her chicken baby food with a needless syringe tonight along with water in the same manner. Now what?

Poor Sasha! It's not normal she still isn't eating well nor had a bowel movement. I would take her into a vet right away, this could be a sign she may be suffering from a surgical complication. She should be examined by a vet now.

I would be very concerned for a complication from the surgery or even a severe toxicity issue. It’s best to take her in to the ER vet, especially since she is a cat. Cats are masters at hiding mild illness, so once they show severe symptoms like this to take them in right away. I hope Daisy is able to make a full recovery. Best of luck to you. Take care.

Hi ! Sorry to hear that Mittens is not well. She went through a big surgery but most cats eat in the evening or the morning afterwards at the latest so there is definitely something not right. Wether is just pain, or something more concerning like an infection it is impossible to tell without an examination. If her tummy looks swollen I would definitely have her checked over ! Looking at wound in the picture, I would not be worried but given all the information ( quiet, not eating/drinking, rapid breathing and possibly distended tummy) I would recommend to have her checked over. Hope all goes well, please keep us posted !
