My pregnant cat has brown discharge. Is this a medical emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | unspayed

My cat is 3 weeks pregnant I went to the vet to do an ultrasound and she said that she might have pyometra and referred me to the hospital where the other doctor said that it's not pyometra and it's too early for the babies to have a heart beat and that everything is fine. Now my cat is having brownish fluid coming out of her and I am worried

I can certainly understand being worried! It's not normal for a cat to have a brownish fluid discharge, either pregnant or not. If she is pregnant, this can be a sign of a spontaneous abortion, or it can be a pyometra. Either is a medical emergency, and I would take Kiara back into a vet immediately.

The on off discharge is quite concerning and is not normal, it may be related to infection or loss of the protective fluids around the kittens. I strongly recommend an ultrasound scan to assess the health of the pregnancy and determine what action is required
