My dog's jaw is broken. Can a vet fix it? What are the options?

My dog has a broken jaw, and I was wondering is it possible for her to get it repaired? We let her out to use the bathroom and she wondered off but when she came back her jaw was hanging and missing teeth

Your dog needs to be evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible. A broken jaw is very painful and the vet will be able to determine the extent of her injuries by taking X-rays and appropriate course of action. It is possible that surgery could fix it. It is very important that Lacey be seen and get her started on painkillers to keep her comfortable (as prescribed by your vet)

    She needs to go back to the veterinarian for xrays of her jaw if it is that loose. I would be concerned that it is broken. She also need to be re-evaluated if she is bleeding and uncomfortable. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

My lab puppy of 5 months got into a fight with my 6 year old German shepherd and he has broken his lower jaw from the growth plate. Being so young and the surgery costing so much, how likely is his jaw to heal by using a muzzle type wrap?
That really depends on the type of break. Some breaks may be able to heal without surgery, but a complicated fracture where the bone is broken into multiple pieces does require surgery. Only the vet who has seen Toby can make the bed determination as to whether or not it can heal without surgery. Because bone has broken from the growth plate, I would be concerned that it won't heal correctly and will affect the growth of the bones on his face. Due to that, I think surgery would be the best option.

my dog got attacked by an American pitbull and his jaw is fractured but it will to much money to repair it. I went to the vets and they said it might be ok but I'm still not sure and worried have you got any advice what I can do at home thank you.
Poor Peppie! It depends on where the fracture is, and whether it is displaced. I have had good luck with fractures of the mandibular symphasis (the very front of the bottom jaw) by having the dog wear a loose-fitting soft muzzle for ~6 weeks and feeding exclusively soft food. The muzzle would be loose enough for Peppie to lap water and soft food, but tight enough that he couldn't totally open his jaw and it would help stabilize. He would wear this 24 hours a day, including while eating and sleeping. Your vet will likely be familiar with this so I recommend calling and asking if this might help. It would only be beneficial for specific types of jaw fractures so it's important for your vet to give the go-ahead first, since they know the specifics of Peppie's fracture but I've had good success using this technique. any help for a fractured jaw at home
Unfortunately there isn't anything you can do at home for a fractured jaw. Peppie will have to be seen by a vet. Even if to just get appropriate pain medication for him. There are no safe over the counte pain medicaitons for pets due to increased risk of liver and/or kidney damage. Poor guy. The best option for him is going to be surgery and even then it will be a long recovery. Poor Jenny!! If you are able to have her evaluated by a veterinarian that would be good. If they are not able to do an extraction (I do not know what level of care you have available where you are) they can at least prescribe some antibiotics to help prevent infection, and some pain medications as well. Once you are back in the U.K. please have Je by looked at as soon as possible-the tooth will need to be removed I suspect.

My dog is a toy poodle and she's bitten by one of my bigger dogs.....her lower jaw is lose.....i took her to the nearest vet...the vet did dressing for my dog....i need advice...now she is still bleeding and she is also uncomfortable.....

It really depends on the break. She should be examined by a vet to determine the best way to treat. Your vet can take an x-ray to evaluate the break and then decide if it should be treated surgically. If the break is mild, than rest and pain medications may be enough.

I'm sorry to hear about this. The biggest concern with broken teeth is if the tooth root is exposed. This is not an emergency, but is painful and makes the teeth and roots susceptible to infection. In some cases the teeth can be repaired by a veterinary dentistry specialist, but in most cases they would have to be extracted. Considering this happened at the veterinary office, they should take some responsibility. I also understand that this would have been a difficult situation to control for the vet clinic and there may have been some broken teeth or dental disease prior to this incident. In these cases, I recommend talking with the veterinary practice owner and expressing your concerns and how you would like to be compensated. I understand that you must be very upset with them, but these matters can get much worse if you involve other people rather than communicating directly with the people in charge. Poor Roxi! Chattering or clicking the teeth together without any obvious behavioral reason is usually caused by a dental problem, or a problem with the temporomandibular joint of the jaw. She may have injured herself when she hit her jaw against your weight, unfortunately. I would recommend taking her to the vet for an exam when you are able to. He/she can do a complete oral exam under sedation to check for any fractured or damaged teeth, and may also recommend x-rays of her skull to evaluate the jaw joint for any problems.

I just got this puppy from a lady online. When I got to her house his face was bleed. She said he fell but his whole jaw is swollen. Is there a way to check to see if his jaw is broken?
Oh my god, that is awful! Poor Rocco. You need to take him into a vet immediately for x-rays. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website.
