Why is my cat limping and losing muscle mass in her back leg?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 8 months and 27 days old | 5 lbs

My cat Shadow has been limping for a month. (Back left leg) Thought she just hurt it and it would go away, but it hasn't. She can walk on it, just limps. Her left hip now looks indented now (like lass of muscle mass or something). I am planning on taking her to the vet, but what could this be?

Poor Shadow! I would be very concerned she has torn a ligament or may have fractured a bone. It does sound like she is suffering from muscle atrophy if her left hip looks indented. Taking her into the vet is exactly the right thing, and I would bring her into one today.

If Shadow is limping, that tells me she is painful. She may have injured her leg leading to the swelling and limping. That leg does look quite swollen. Weight loss could be from disease, as can the hair loss. She needs to see a vet immediately, please take her into one now. Best of luck.
