Why is my dog coughing persistently and clearing her throat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Collie | Female | spayed | 12 years old | 76 lbs

Lassie has a cough . I has been there for a while. She was treated with antibiotics to rule out a respiratory infection. From an almost dry cough went into what it sounds more of a need to clear phlegm.

Lassie may have congestive heart failure and therefore she needs to be examined by a veterinarian. Your veterinarian will do blood tests, an xray and possibly will want to do an ultrasound. If congestive heart failure is diagnosed, Lassie will need to take medication to get rid of the fluid in her lungs, and medication to help her heart beat more efficiently. Overall her quality of life will be improved significantly. Please take Lassie in for an exam.
