Is my Shiba Inu's heavy winter shedding from hind legs normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shiba Inu | Male | neutered | 9 months and 14 days old | 27 lbs

My 9 old month old Shiba Inu has recently been shedding a lot. Most of the hair seems to be coming off of his bottom area (not his bum, but his general bottom area above his hind legs). Is this normal? It's a bit strange since it is the winter season right now in Ontario and he needs the extra fur. His diet has not changed and he has been using the same shampoo for 7 months. Does he need a vet visit?

He is probably just shedding his undercoat which happens a couple times a year, especially if he otherwise seems normal with no itching and scratching. If it continues than have your vet take a look at him to make sure he doesn't have a medical condition. http://pets.thenest.com/shedding-shiba-inu-6409.html
