My dog has many mast cell tumors. What are her best treatment options?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 11 lbs

I wanted a 2nd opinion. My dog had 3 tumors for about 3 years. Recently 19 popped up. Took her to the vet and she has Mast Cell Tumors. I know they need to cut all them off, there's one on her head, ear, on her feet and legs. It stinks really bad. I love my dog a lot, as most of us do. Do you think I should go forth with the treatment and do chemotherapy or could I get them removed without the chemo? I know she's stage 3 probably. Not sure grade yet. Any other options? Holistic? thanks.

I'm very sorry Daisy has so many tumors! The course of treatment depends on the grade of the mast cell tumors (MCT). In low grade tumors that have been removed with adequate margins, further treatment is typically not needed. If there is spread to local lymph nodes, for example, then addition treatment is needed. Once the grade of the tumors is known, that will help your decision, but given that you think she might be at stage 3, I would recommend doing surgery and chemotherapy. As for holistic treatments, there may be complimentary treatments you can do in addition to the surgery and chemo, such as acupuncture, and I would discuss the use those with your vet.
