My dog is peeing blood and straining. What to do before vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Scottish Terrier | Female | 7 years and 7 months old | 17 lbs

My seven year old Scottish has developed a bladder or kidney problem. She tries frequently to urinate but produces little. She did pass blood in the urine. Her abdomen feels taught to the touch. Since it is Christmas Day, what can I do to help her until I can get to a vet?

The symptoms Patti is suffering from indicates she is probably suffering from a urinary tract infection. The only treatment that can give her any relief is an antibiotic treatment, which will also solve the problem, but you will need to take her to a veterinary clinic or ER in order to get this treatment.
