My dog ate headphones. Is copper wiring toxic? What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | unneutered

My dog just ate a pair of my headphones while I was asleep. I heard headphones have copper wiring in them, and I'm concerned he's going to have seizures or die. It's 2:45 in the morning so calling the vet is not an option, especially before Christmas.

The concern that I would have is that the headphones will cause a blockage in Bo's stomach, or if there is copper wiring in it, it could pierce his intestines. You will have to monitor him for now, as it's not recommend to make him vomit them back up. Signs of obstruction or perforation include vomiting, anorexia, extreme lethargy, constipation, or diarrhea. Should you see any of those signs, Bo will have to see a vet immediately. You will need to monitor him and his feces for the next 72 hours, and if you don't see any signs of the headphones in his feces within 72 hours, he will need to see a vet right away.
