Why does my new puppy have smelly gas? Is it normal for a 2-month-old?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My two month old puppy has smelly gas and I'm not sure if that is normal or not. We adopted him a couple days ago and he was doing that when we first got him. He usually poops afterward but not always. Is this a problem?

No, it's not normally to have smelly gas, and it could be due to intestinal worms or a sudden change in diet. Should he not be up to date on his deworming treatments, you will need to get one from the vet. To help with his smelly gas, you can try feeding him a bland diet if he is up to date on his deworming treatment. I would feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet.

Sometimes parasitical infection (gastroenteritis) or gastrointestinal inflammation of other sort can cause these kind of signs. Feces of such young puppies smell quite badly and it is not unusual that gas is really smelly. If not done yet I would recommend to have Penelope checked by your veterinarian and have her treated for worms.
