My Westie has itchy, bleeding skin bumps. Is it dog skin cancer?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | West Highland White Terrier | Female | spayed | 11 lbs

Hi there, my west highland terrier (8 Years Old) has some skin issues, she has multiple bumps/spots on her skin that she is finding irritating and keeps scratching them and she begins to bleed every so often. I am very worried that it could be skin cancer. Could you please hopefully reassure me that it isn't?

I don't typically see skin cancer causing itchiness, however Westie's frequently have allergies, so I would be inclined to consider that first before something like cancer. I'd also want to rule out fleas and mites (mange). Allergies are quite common, and if you take Mollie to her vet he should be able to rule out parasites, and treat her for the itchiness and the secondary bacterial skin infection that is likely also present.
