My cat licked her leg raw. What can I put on it safely before the vet?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 1 year and 8 months old | 6.5 lbs

My cat is licking a spot on her leg raw. Is there anything I can put on it to help it heal that won't make her sick if she lick it? We plan to take her in to the vet after the Christmas holiday.

Unless you have a cream that is made for veterinary patients I would not risk it. You can usually find hydrocortisone creams at PersMart or Petco - read the label to be sure, but they should be safe if licked. While you are there purchase an ecollar to keep her from being able to lick it. Then yes, definitely get her in as soon as you can to figure out what's causing her to want to lick.

    Poor Misha! I'm glad that you are planning to take her to the vet, since she will probably need an antibiotic as well as a short-term steroid or other anti-inflammatory medication to treat this problem effectively. Generally speaking, it's safe to use a topical antibiotic spray on sore spots like this - but I would recommend getting one that is labeled for use in cats, since they can be sensitive to many ingredients. You should be able to find an over-the-counter spray or ointment like this at most pet stores. I would also recommend getting an e-collar (plastic cone) for her to wear until you are able to get her in to see the vet - this will prevent her from continuing to lick the sore area and make it worse, and will also allow you to apply a spray or ointment if you wish without her immediately licking it off.
