Why does my long-haired cat pull belly hair? Is it stress or anxiety?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 16 lbs

My cat has long hair and I get him shaved twice a year. In the winter, when he grows it out, he pulls all the hair off his belly. Any reason why?

Psychological disturbances are a very common cause of self-inflicted hair loss in cats. Cats who pull, chew, or excessively groom their fur do this despite the fact that their skin does not itch. This may be a manifestation of stress or anxiety.
