My senior dog's ear is swollen overnight. Is it an infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

One ear of my 13 year old dog's has swollen up over night but not the other. Apart from a cough which he'll be getting an X-Ray for in the new year and some arthritis, he's on pretty good condition for his age. Could he have simply scratched it too hard?

It sounds like Lucky could have been shaking his head a lot or may have scratched it a lot causing it to swell up. The concern with a swollen ear is the question of what causing him to scratch at his ear or shake his head. More than likely, this would be caused due to an ear infection. I would not wait until the new year to take him into the vet, I would take him into one first thing in the morning. Any possibly ear infection should be investigated as soon as possible, as leaving them untreated can lead to hearing loss. The vet can diagnose if he does have an ear infection, and can prescribe a treatment for it.
