My 7 month old dog had her bottom right canine tooth knocked out prior to adoption. The tooth came out with approximately 2/3 of the root, leaving the root tip behind. Our vet thinks she needs surgery to remove root but this surgery can lead to a fractured jaw and the possibility of damaging the mandibular canal. Do the future risks of not having surgery (chronic infection, cyst formation...) out-weigh the possible effects of surgery (fractured jaw, canal damage..)? Should surgery be done?

I can understand being concerned about the risks of surgery, but given the future risks of not having it removed, I think your vet is correct that Aspen should have the surgery. Any surgery does have risks and your vet has to let you know what these risks are, but leaving the tooth root in can cause a lot of problems in the future so it' best to have it removed now.
