My dog has a smelly neck wound with worms. How to calm him for care?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 7 years and 9 months old | 86 lbs

my dog has a good size hole at the back of his neck that has worms in it and smells for 5 days now, i've tried spraying him with screwworm spray but not much goes in the hole because he's running away. What can i give him to let him sleep or calm him down. Going to the vet is a no no.

Do not give any medications to Popeye without the advice of your veterinarian. There is nothing we can recommend that you can safely give at home. Legally, we are prohibited from providing such information in the absence of a physical exam and a veterinarian-patient-client relationship. Contact your vet and explain the situation. He or she may be able to dispense an oral sedative that will work enough to get Popeye into the clinic. You can also try luring him into a crate so he can't run away and then treating him as you've been.
