My budgie was exposed to secondhand smoke. Will it get a respiratory infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Male | 11 months and 21 days old

My new budgie was exposed to second hand smoking two days before I got it. The person who gave it to me didn't know it's harmful to them. But now I'm panicking about it and it's driving me paranoid. I'm imagining bobbing tail while it's just trembling because it's still scared of it's new home I think. Are two days of second hand smoking enough to cause a respiratory infection? And if it doesn't show any signs of illness after that, does it mean it's safe or it can show up later?

Two days of second hand smoke should have no ill effects on Rio. Signs of illness in birds include lethargy, perching with feathers puffed out, decreased appetite and possibly discharge from the nares (nose). You are likely correct in assuming the behavior is due to a change in homes/environment. Give him a few days to settle in. Provide fresh food and water. Afterwards, you can start working with Rio to hand tame him.
