Why does my kitten climb high and only drink running water from the sink?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Male | neutered | 1 year and 8 months old | 6 lbs

My new kitten cries at the ceiling a lot and is always at the top of my closet. What's with this him wanting to be high up thing. He will meow at a wall because he can't get to the top. He loves to sleep on top of my hutch. Should I be concerned. He also always wants fresh water from the sink. Any tips on how I can get him to drink from his water dish that holds water and as it empties more flows in?

It's very common for cats to want to get up to high areas - this is a natural behavior for them, since higher resting places are more secure for animals in the wild, and cats are excellent climbers. I would recommend providing cat trees that he can climb, with platforms near the top that he can lay on if he wishes. You can also provide beds or blankets on top of bookcases or other tall furniture if he enjoys being up there :) Many cats also enjoy drinking fresh, moving water from sink or bathtub. As long as he does drink from his water bowl if he needs to, this isn't anything to be concerned about. Providing a cat fountain with a continuous stream of water may help encourage him to drink more from this rather than the sink, but he will likely always enjoy doing this when he can.
