Why does my dog struggle to climb with weak back legs? Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I recently rescued a 4ish year old black lab/staffi mix. I noticed that his hindend lacked muscular definition and whenever he gets up on the couch he does it one day at a time and seems to lag when it comes to his back legs. He recently tried to get up on my bed and it was watching a 14yr old dog who no longer trusted his back legs. He shows no other signs of weariness or discomfort. Ive heard of other large dogs being especially mindful of climbing one leg at a time. Is this normal?

That does not sound normal for a 4 year old dog. He could have hip dysplasia and you could have him examined by a vet to diagnose. A vet can do a full orthopedic examination and then take x-rays to help determine the exact cause. He may need an anti-inflammatory, joint supplement, and other medications to help.
