Can my dog with IBS take prednisone long-term for symptom control?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Male | neutered | 5 years and 6 months old | 30 lbs

If my dog has IBS can he stay on a small dose of prednisone preventitively? He seems to do best when he is on it.

Yes, many dogs with IBS are treated long-term with daily prednisone. We normally try to wean them down to the lowest dose that is still effective at controlling their symptoms to help minimize side effects, but this is a very common treatment strategy for this disease.
