My dog just got spayed. Is pain medication normal for recovery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 4 months and 19 days old | 21 lbs

Hello, my dog was spayed yesterday and was behaving super oddly. She wouldn't eat and had an accident in our house which is not like her. Our vet was very hesistant but gave us 25 mg rimadyl daily for 3 days as needed. we gave her one this morning with some human food as she would not eat her kibble. a few hours later she's back to normal, even ate her kibble. i see online that daily dose of rimadyl is 2mg/pound (she's 20). is it normal for dogs to need pain meds post spay? thanks!

Yes, absolutely normal ! We all would want some pain relief if we had a similar surgery. I am happy to hear that Ella has improved and is better in herself .The most painful days are the first 3-4 after surgery, remember to try to keep her rested until you have your final post op check up and any skin sutures, if present, are removed.
