My dog won't poop in the snow. What to do about dog constipation?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | 2 years and 11 months old

My dog has not and will not poop outdoors in 4 days...ground is covered with snow. How can I prevent him from becoming constipated or what can I do if he does? I have put paper down indoors however, he will not use it.

It sounds like Gizmo is being stubborn and doesn't want to poop in the snow! I would try clearing off a patch of your yard so that he has a clean space to go poop. You can also give him a tablespoon of canned pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling) with his food to try to get him to poop. If he still isn't pooping in another 24 hours, then you need to take him into the vet.
