Is the fast gum refill test for dog internal bleeding a myth?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Male | unneutered | 10 months and 16 days old | 13 lbs

Last question. I heard if you lightly put pressure over the tooth gum and it goes from white to red fast, they don't have internal bleeding. That is what happen to my dog. Is that just a myth. Sorry this is my first dog and it's so nerve racking on what can happen!

Don't apologize for asking questions, that's what we are here for :-) Yes, you are correct that the capillary refill time (pressing on the gums) is an indication of blood loss, either from internal bleeding or anemia. The normal refill time is less than two seconds, so if it goes from white to red quickly, then Jim is fine!
