My dog ate rawhide. How long does it take to pass and is he okay?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I gave my dog a 19 pound bichon/poodle mix rawhide for the first time as a treat. It was shaped as a candy cane for the holidays, and he consumed about 3 inches of it. I'm not sure if he broke into small pieces, anyways should be concerned? I've been watching him for the last 24 hours and everything seemed fine, he still has his appetite, energy and his poop is normal. Will he be ok and how will I know if the rawhide has passed?

It typically takes up to 72 hours for something to pass fully, and I would continue to monitor him for now. Three inches of it isn't a large piece, and hopefully it should pass without issue. It is a good sign that he is eating is normal, along with his energy and poop, so I would continue to watch him for the next 48 hours to be safe.
