My cat has black dandruff and blood clots. Could it be fleas?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 5 months and 17 days old

My cat is having a lot of black and white dandruf , when he gets up from a nap, it's all you can see, but today I saw little clots of blood. What can I do? What's happening to him? Shall I give him a shower as the dandruf might be irritating him

It sounds like Markus has a skin problem of some kind causing the black and white dandruff as well as the spots of blood - if he isn't currently on a good quality monthly flea medication like Revolution or Advantage Multi, this is the first thing I would suggest since "flea dirt" can look very much like what you are describing. If you're positive that he doesn't have fleas, then I would recommend taking him to the vet for an exam - he/she can do some simple skin tests if needed to help determine the problem and get him started on appropriate medication to treat it. I would not recommend giving Markus a shower, since this will not help to treat the underlying problem and will probably be quite scary and stressful for him.
