Is 30 minutes of exercise enough for my 6-month GSD puppy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | 5 months and 16 days old | 55 lbs

Hi, I have a 6 month German Shepherd Puppy and am very sadly considering giving him away. The cause of this is the lack of exercise which we provide for him. At the moment, we provide our puppy Max with a half an hour walk around the block everyday. Is this enough exercise for his health and wellbeing and will we need further exercise as he gets older? Thank you, Harley

I'm very sorry that you may have to give Max away. As a GSD, he will need a lot of daily exercise. As a breed, they are very high energy dogs who require at least 45 minutes twice a day when fully grown, so he will need more exercise as he gets old. At his age, 30 minutes of exercise is fine, but he should get that twice a day. I would make an effort to get him more exercise in order to meet his needs.

It depends a bit on whether Max is from working or show lines, since I see quite a range in activity level and exercise needs in GSDs depending on breeding... but in general, I would say that a 30 minute walk once daily is not nearly enough exercise for an adolescent German Shepherd. These are generally quite active, energetic dogs who need lots of activity as well as lots of mental stimulation in the form of training or some other type of "work" to be happy. If your lifestyle does not allow you to provide this level of activity and training and your pup seems overly hyper or unhappy, it would certainly be reasonable to consider rehoming him to a family who might be more active and able to spend more time working with him.
