Why would a healthy puppy's heart stop during a routine spay surgery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 11 months and 15 days old | 5.5 lbs

I took my 4 month old puppy to the vet today to get second set of shots and to be fixed using laser. The vet called and said her heart stopped in surgery and he did all he could. What are some reasons this happens?

I am so very sorry that Sassy's heart stopped in surgery! Unfortunately, this can happen in surgery, and oftentimes there is no known reason for it. Some reasons that this could occur include development of an abnormal heart rhythm, low blood pressure, low body temperature, or anesthetic depth resulting in inadequate respiratory depth or frequency. Anesthesia and surgery both carry risks, and while it is not common to lose a patient during a routine procedure such as a spay on a young and healthy dog, it does happen. I am very sorry for your loss, please accept my condolences.
