My dog is coughing with clear spit. Are there home remedies to help?

My dog is coughing a lot, sometimes with clear spit. He is ok when outside even with the really cold weather. He is a boxer with short hair. I have tried having him near lots of steam(bathroom hot water steam). It helps for a few then he coughs again. I cant afford a vet but I am scared for him. I love him. Please help. Home remedies? Cough can be caused by an infection, heart problem or lung condition, it is important to first know the cause before treating it as treatment is different from condition to another, symptomatic treatment of cough can only be achieved with prescription medications, there are no effective remedies to stop cough. The most common disease causing cough is a viral infection called Kennel cough, this disease usually resolves without treatment within a couple weeks but if the cough is too severe it is recommended to go to the vet in order to get cough medicine and antibiotics.
