My dog is peeing blood after bladder stone and catheter. Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Female | spayed | 7 years and 5 months old | 7 lbs

My mini dachshund had a bladder stone yesterday and was completely blocked from urinating. They gave her a catheter and got it out and her urine was very thick. She is on Baytril and has urinated today, but it has a blood in it. Is that to be expected?

It's likely that you'll see blood for a while, based on the fact that she likely has a urinary tract infection (the reason for the Baytril) and that urinary stones are irritating to the bladder wall and can cause bleeding. In addition, catheterization can cause some trauma, so I'm not surprised that you're seeing a little blood. Assuming everything else is normal, and the blood starts to diminish over the next day or two, I think yes, this is to be expected, but do watch her closely for signs that she's getting blocked again.
