My dog swallowed a Metronidazole 400mg tablet. Will she be okay?

My 5 1/2 Chi Staffy Bull (weighs 9-10kg) has swollowed One Metronidazole 400mg tablet. Is this going to harm her? Worried sick

Oh no, it's not good that Bella ate the metronidazole tablet! There is a wide range of doses for metronidazole for dogs depending on the condition being treated, and at her weight and the dose she ate, the tablet is within the range of doses. It's on the higher end, but still within the dose range. That being said, you could see some side effects from eating this medication, such as GI upset. Excessive salivation, gagging, nausea, vomiting, and decreased appetite are the most common side effects seen. If you see any of those signs, withhold food for 8-12 hours, then feed her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. Rarely you can see neurological disorders from an accidental overdose, but she likely may not show these signs due to her not overdosing. It's just something I will mention you should be aware of, and if you see anything concerning or she won't stop vomiting, won't eat the bland diet, and/or becomes very lethargic, take her into a vet right away. Metronidazole is a very commonly used drug to treat Giardia as well as other conditions. At a normal dose, Metronidazole rarely causes any side effects at all in pets. Nausea/decreased appetite would be the most common side effect (but once again, this is rare). At very high doses or long term dosing (taking nonstop for months) we can see neurological effects, but this do not occur at a dose that would be used to treat Giardia. Our dog (50 lbs) got two doses of metronidazole tablets 250mg tonight instead of one. I had not realized my husband had already given her the dose for tonight. Should I induce vomiting or will she be ok?
Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Kachina. She will be fine. The dose range of metronidazole can go up to 11mg per day, which would be 550mg at her weight. Depending on the infection, the dose rate can be even higher than 11mg. All of this is to say you did not overdose her, and you do not need to induce vomiting. She will be fine. I hope this helps!

Ideally she should continue to eat her food so if Sasha does not want to eat her food consistently, she may warrant a visit to the veterinarian. Otherwise, she should be ok! I hope this is helpful!

My Jack Russell has been diagnosed with IBD. He's 21 lbs. My vet has him on Metronidazole 2 ml (liquid form) twice daily and says he needs to be on this for the rest of his life. First, would this dosage be considered low? And secondly, I'm concerned
It is a low dose based on Coby's weight. There can be long term side effects from using it. Do not lower the dose or give it every other day. It has to be given as prescribed in order to work. Best of luck.

Unfortunately no, it may not be enough to be effective. I'm quite concerned that Kaia is having neurological symptoms and that is a medical emergency. This is not something you should see how she does at home or try to treat at home, this requires a vet visit right away. I strongly urge you to take her into a vet immediately to get checked out. Lethargy (loss of energy) following a dose of metronidazloe is a sign of a possible drug reaction. Her biting everything could be a sign of discomfort? This is quite an unusual symptom, so it is hard to say for sure. Most of the time a reaction to Metronidazole involves any of the following: neurological symptoms (i.e. seizure, head tilt, etc), stomach upset (vomiting and or diarrhea) and lethargy. I would suggests calling your vet in the morning to ask if the medication should be continued. They likely will have you stop the medication and try an alternative one. Also, I would make sure you are giving this medication with a full meal, to reduce adverse reactions. I hope that everything works out well for your pet Daisy. Best wishes and take care.

Sorry Jake is having problems. Metronidazole is often used to treat diarrhea in dogs. It is not common for metronidazole to cause vomiting. However, the underlying CAUSE of the diarrhea is usually some form of gastroenteritis which is inflammation of the stomach and intestine. Gastroenteritis often includes vomiting and can occur for many reasons including: bacterial imbalance, viral infections such as parvovirus (Jake is too old for this to be a concern) ingesting non-food items such as trash or mulch inflammatory bowel disease cancer in the GI tract intestinal parasites At higher doses, metronidazole can cause "grogginess" or an unsteady gait. If he is showing those signs, discontinue the metronidazole. Correct, I would hold off on Pepto, but Pepcid AC is fine. Poor Maxine, it sounds like she is very sensitive to medication which can commonly occur. Metronidazole can be hard on any dog's system especially depending on dose. In an ideal world you would speak to the prescribing vet before stopping the medication as they know the story regarding why they have prescribed it. But if this is not possible we must use best evidence, and in this case it would seem considering her history that the drug is causing the head tremors. These could get worse the more she takes the medication. Some year in her bottom is not going to do her serious harm immediately and there are other treatment options. I would try and speak to your vet as soon as you can but in the mean time don't give any more medication. If her condition starts to deteriorate take her to an emergency vet in case there is something else going on. When you speak to your vet make sure and explain how sensitive she has been in the past and with trial and error​ you will find a way to treat h

If you gave the medication as your vet prescribed it she should probably be fine. In rare cases of overdose adverse reactions include changes in mentation (depression, nervousness, restlessness) and behavior. It may also cause sedation. This is very difficult to assess fully but metronidazole is generally considered more likely to result inn stomach upsets. Probiotics are very helpful after a course of antibiotics but are less effective if given alongside. Your vet should be able to confirm the risks and benefits of stopping treatment early given possible side effects
