My cat has ringworm. Is it safe to pet him without getting infected?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 1 year and 4 months old

Hello! I just came back from the vet and he told me that Felix is beginning to have fungi. He got it after fighting another cat, I think. Anyways, I've read online that fungi in cats is transmitted to humans by touch, however, the doctor told me not to worry and just use the ointment. I know it's foolish of me, but I'm still reluctant to pet Felix. Is it alright if I pet him? He only has the fungi on his head, and he's acting normally. Thank you for all your help!

If indeed Felix is suffering from a fungus, then there certainly is a potential for a human to get infected, The most common fungal infections in cats are caused by microsporum and trichophyton spp. and those certainly are contagious to humans, I would not let him sleep in your bed for now and when you pet him, wash your hands with soap and water afterwards. Diligently use the ointment and do not stop using it until at least two weeks after all signs of the fungus are gone.
