How to balance homemade food for my senior dog with allergies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | spayed | 13 years and 8 months old | 80 lbs

My 14 year old American Pit Mix has a food allergy and we did an elimination diet. I am concerned that she may not be getting enough nutritional value while trying to figure out what she cannot handle. I make her food in a rice cooker. Daily meal split to feed her twice a day: 2 cups of dry rice Makes about 7 to 9 cups cooked 1/4 cup blueberries 2 oz white fish Added after cooked: 1/2 cup of frozen peas and carrots 1 TBS of peanut butter powder 5 pumps of Salmon Oil

Good for you for committing to make Sweetpea's food in order to help manage her food allergies! It can be tricky to assure that home cooked diets for dogs are properly balanced with all necessary vitamins, minerals, and nutrients. I always recommend utilizing recipes formulated by veterinary nutritionists, such as those available on www.balanceit.com. These recipes can be tailored for dogs with food allergies to avoid certain ingredients (or even just use the ingredients currently being used), but will also have the vitamin and mineral supplements available to assure that the diet is balanced. I hope this helps and that all goes well for Sweetpea!
