Why is my cat losing weight, has skin lesions, and painful claw trims?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 1 year and 8 months old | 8 lbs

Suzu has been losing weight recently and I'm very concerned. She is eating well, affectionate, and sassy as always. I had her tested for worms and she was negative. She is also negative for FIV and FeLV. She has some unexplained lesions that the vet couldn't explain and seems to be in a severe amount of pain when her claws are trimmed. I would be so grateful for any advice you may be able to give. Thank you so much for your time and effort.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. I am sorry to hear that Suzu is not feeling well. These lesions and the claw pain could be part of an immune-mediated disease that could also be causing the weight loss. If she has not had general blood testing done I would recommend doing so to see if there are any systemic changes to be concerned about that may explain the clinical signs you are seeing. If the blood testing comes back normal, I would recommend having a veterinary dermatologist take a look at the lesions so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
