Can my dog with arthritis eat regular mussels for joint health?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | spayed

I know green lipped mussels are good for dogs with joint problems. What about Scottish/normal/uk-local mussels? Can dogs eat these and will they also be good for its joints (has arthritis)? thankyou!

No one really know how (or if) green lipped mussel extracts work to help arthritis. They do tend to be high in Onega 3 fatty acids which have been shown to help with arthritis. I believe all mussels are high in these fatty acids so other mussels might help too, but it’s possible that there is something else ‘special’ about green lipped mussels in particular. I don’t think it would hurt a dog to eat mussels as long as it is otherwise healthy, but would recommend cooked mussels to avoid the potential for food poisoning.
