My puppy ate a tulip petal. Should I worry about a small amount?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bulldog | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 13 days old

I caught my 3 month old bulldog puppy chewing on a tulip pedal. I took it away before he could swallow the whole thing, and I think it was just the one pedal (if not it definitely wasn't much more). I know tulip bulbs are toxic but I didn't know if I should be concerns about a small amount of a pedal

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The toxic components in tulips is concentrated in the bulb but is also present (in less concentrated amounts) in the other parts of the plant as well. I think Rocky will be fine but symptoms you would see would be associated with irritation of the mouth and esophagus: drooling and maybe vomiting. If you didn't do so already, flush out his mouth really well. If vomiting occurs I would have him seen by a vet. I hope this helps and I wish Rocky the best!

Hi there. You are correct in that the petals are not as toxic as the bulb/stems/leaves. Signs that Rocky is feeling the toxicity would be falling over, sleepy, sore abdomen, vomiting/diarrhea, tremors or seizures. If you notice anything abnormal bring him to a vet immediately, but if he is happy, eating/drinking normally, and playing, he should be ok.
