My puppy's poop has worms. What are they and how do I treat them?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 6 months and 20 days old

I just left for a trip today and my friend is watching my dog. She sent me a picture of my dogs poop with what looks like a worm in it but I’ve never seen her have segments in her poop. I make sure I check because we live with neighbors with dogs who use the same area. I’m not sure what to do.

These are roundworms. They are a common parasite for puppies to acquire at birth and don't tend to cause any major problems. They are easily treatable with deworming medication that can be purchased at a pet store, or a veterinary office. I recommend having a vet prescribe the medication to ensure it's safe for Oreo and proper instructions are given. I hope that helps and all is well with Oreo.

It's a bit hard to see from the picture, but yes it's possible that Ryder has worms in her poop. Worms are very common in young puppies. I would take her and a sample of her poop into the vet this week. The vet can confirm if she has worms, the type of worms she has, and can prescribe a deworming treatment for them. I hope this helps!
