My dog still has fleas! Can I combine topical and oral flea meds?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Toy Poodle | Female | spayed | 11 years and 1 month old | 10 lbs

Hello, my toy poodle has fleas pretty bad. I've tried advantage 2, flea collar, flea baths and a chewable flea medication. I've treated my yard and other pets. She still has numerous fleas. Can I give her another topical treatment of advantage 2 after giving her the injested flea medication?

Most oral flea preventatives are safe to give along with topicals, but it would help to know exactly what the oral medication was and when medications were given. You may want to ask your veterinarian what flea product they would recommend in your area - in some areas fleas could be resistant to the medications. You also may need to treat your home - calling a pest control company is safest.

Hello. It can take treating fleas consistently for 3 months in a row to break the flea life cycle. You can definitely use a topical & an oral flea tablet at the same time. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
