Why does my Great Dane have dry white patches on his elbows?

I own a 3 year old male Great Dane and he seems to have dry white patches on his elbows. I don’t know whether I should get it checked or could it be from sunbathing on the deck everyday? Pet's info: Dog | Great Dane | Male | neutered | 2 years and 11 months old | 110 lbs

It may be a combination of dry skin and laying on the rough surface. Consider adding an essential fatty acid supplement to his diet. EFAs may promote healthy skin and coat. Brands include DermCaps, Welactin or EicosaCaps. Provide a well padded area for him to lay down. The elbows in large breeds take a lot of weight when they lay down and this can cause the condition you are seeing.
