My 9-week-old puppy has bloody diarrhea and mucus. What should I do?

Congrats on your new dog, but I'm sorry that Duke is sick! There are a couple of things this could be causing the bloody diarrhea. My first concern would be parvovirus. This is a highly contagious disease of unvaccinated dogs, and given his age, he will not be fully vaccinated. Parvo is very often deadly, and is considered a medical emergency. It could also be a change in diet, a GI illness, or intestinal parasites causing this bloody diarrhea. Due to the high risk of parvo, you need to take Duke into a vet immediately. The vet can diagnose what is causing the bloody diarrhea and can treat him for it. Good luck, I hope this helps!

If he is behaving normally otherwise (eating and drinking fine, active and playful, no vomiting), then he may have parasites that are causing the diarrhea. It very well could be parvo. I suggest you get her to your vet ASAP for an exam and testing. You really need to know if it is parvo or not. Either way, your vet will help you determine the cause of the bloody diarrhea and give you treatment options. Then, once this diarrhea is cleared up you can get her started on her vaccines. There are so many things that can cause diarrhea and straining to defecate in dogs. There is no way for me to tell your for sure. The most common reasons for this in young dogs is internal parasites or a viral disease (ie: parvo). It could be due to dietary indiscretion if she ate something abnormal. I strongly recommend you get her to your vet for an exam. If she was an older dog my answer would be different. In puppies is not recommended to wait on diagnostics when having these issues even if they seem fine now. I am worried about the mucous and the reddish color to the stools. Please take her in for an exam and get the stool tested for parasites and her tested for parvo. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Poor guy. I suspect he may have a parasite. Especially with liquid projectile diarrhea. Giardia and coccidia are known for causing this type of loose stool, especially going on 3 days. At this point, he needs to have his stool tested by your local veterinarian or humane society and put on appropriate medication/dewormer based on what is found. I would highly recommend taking him in right away for fear that he will become dehydrated very quickly and lead to a prolonged recovery. Continue to feed him only a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese and small amounts of diluted plain non-flavored Pedialyte to hopefully prevent him from dehydrating. I hope your pet recovers soon with the appropriate medical care.

Once instance of mucousy diarrhea with some blood tinge is not overly concerning if the puppy is eating and otherwise acting normally. I suggest you get him back to the vet as soon as possible if the signs persist or worsen. The mucus can be concerning as the parvo virus will slough the intestinal lining making it look like this so if the puppy is ill you need to consider this could be parvo virus infection in which case, this would be an emergency.

Blood in the poop can be caused by intestinal worms, a stomach illness, sudden change in diet, eating something rotten, a foreign body, or a severe illness like parvo. Because poop in the poop can have some very serious causes and it's been going on for a few days, it's time to see the vet. The vet can diagnose what is causing it and can treat her. I'm sorry both your puppies are sick! I would be very concerned about parvovirus, especially since they are both having diarrhea. Parvovirus is highly contagious, and deadly. Even though they were vaccinated at 7-8 weeks, this one vaccine is not enough to incur fully immunity. It take three rounds of vaccines in order to incur full immunity. Other possible reasons include a severe GI illness, eating something rotten, or intestinal worms. Because of their age, the risk of parvo, and the fact that Bentley has had bloody diarrhea for three days, they both need to see a vet immediately. I would see if you can borrow money from family and friends, and I can give you some resources that may help you afford a vet. You can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online. There is also an organization called Red Rover that give grants for treatment of sick animals, and you can see if you qualify for one of their

It sounds as your puppy is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking him to the vet the first chance you get, he will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection he will need an antibiotic course and a special food for a few days in order to get better.

Having a new puppy can be so much fun, but as a new owner it can definitely be a little stressful! It sounds like Bella may have colitis from changing her food around. She may also have GI parasites causing the diarrhea. There is also a possibility she could have a serious infection like parvovirus. Diarrhea with blood and mucous can be concerning in a little puppy as it can lead to dehydration and other issues. I think it's very important you take Bella to see a veterinarian as soon as possible so they can check her stool and decide if she needs a dewormer. They can also advise you as to if any other medications are needed. I would try to get Bella into see your veterinarian as soon as you can. You can try offering a bland diet of boiled chicken and sweet potato or rice until you can see your veterinarian. I hope she is feeling better soon!
