My cat is anxious and over-grooms, causing fur loss. How can I help?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 13 years and 9 months old | 9 lbs

My cat has always had anxiety. She isn’t the jumpy type, but she does over-groom herself. She has missing patches of fur on one side of her lower back. Usually as a kitten this would happen to her and she would get over it in about a week and she would heal. Her anxiety has been pretty bad the past few months and i’ve been hesitant to take her to a vet because it makes her extremely anxious to go in the car, so i was hoping you could give me some advice on how to help her be less anxious. Thanks

I'm sorry Lynx has problems with anxiety. One option for decreasing stress is to add a Feliway Diffuser ( https://www.feliway.com/us#redirected ) to your house. This is a calming pheromone that will work for a month and may be beneficial long term. I have also had luck with Rescue Remedy ( http://www.bachflower.com/rescue-remedy-pet/ ) which can be added to the water. Although you mentioned that this has been a long time problem, it certainly would be worth having your veterinarian examine Lynx to check for any underlying skin problems that are playing a role in her over grooming. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Thanks for using PetCoach.
