Is minoxidil safe for cats once it's completely dry and rinsed off?

Can completely dry minoxidil hurt cats? If the minoxidil has been dry for around 8 hours and it is rinsed off, can that dampness hurt cats?

Great question! As I'm sure you are aware, minoxidil is highly toxic to cats. From what I have found about the product, toxicity has occurred when cats have walked through the spilled product, licked it off their owners head, or when owners have applied it to the cat itself. As long as it is completely dried and has been rinsed off fully, Zelda should be fine. To be safe, do not allow her to lick your hair, and always apply the Minoxidil in a room that is not accessible to her. Clean up any spills promptly, and never put it on her. In general I would keep cats away from all chemicals and not let them lick you or the chemical off you. It is a good idea to do as you are, washing your hands well and drying them after the use of rogaine, And it is also good of you to wait until it is dry and you can rinse it out. For the time you have the rogaine in your hair, just do not let the kitties get near your hair. Unfortunately, cats lack the specific enzyme necessary to break down Minoxidil making them more susceptible to toxicity than dogs. Minoxidil® exposure can result in lethargy, hypotension, pulmonary edema, damage to the heart muscle and death from cardiac failure. However, if you handle the use like you have been there should be no problem.

Hi I realise that Rogaine is toxic to cats. Is this also the case once it has dried or stained a pillow case for instance? Could a cat become ill simply from this kind of second hand exposure?
Hi there! If the medication is dried there is pretty low chance that it would be harmful; however, repeated offenses of licking the medication would worry me. I would recommend maybe moving the pillow out of reach when not in use to avoid the cat licking it. Also, continue to monitor the cat for any behavior changes, vomiting/diarrhea, etc. If you notice any thing off or odd I would definitely take him/her to be evaluated by a veterinarian. She's a pretty cat! In order for her to have any toxic effects from the minoxidil, she would need to ingest it. (so if she were to lick your hair, or spend a lot of time directly on your pillow and then grooming herself) Toxicity would not occur from breathing it in. Additionally, the nature of the toxicity is usually due to vasodilation (dilating the blood vessels which can cause low blood pressure) which would not cause. a direct toxic effect on the heart. As for why she's tilting and leaning more when she is sitting, I don't know why she is doing that; however, I think its very unlikely that it is due to the minoxidil. Take her to your vet. She may have some back pain, or one or more paws may be sore, or she may have some other issue affecting her balance. Thank you for asking Boop by Petco!

I think you are worrying too much. When gets lick a toxic substance they almost always start drooling and foaming at the mouth. If he didn't do that then he likely didn't get enough or any at all in his mouth. Just monitor him for now and if he starts acting sick then I would get him to your vet for an exam. Best wishes.

I bought a hair loss shampoo for myself called Nioxin. It does not contain minoxidil but does contain peppermint oil which I’ve read can be toxic to cats. I’m attaching a picture of the ingredients - is this safe for me to use with a cat in the house
I would be cautious using this around your cat. Since the shampoo isn't something that will remain on your hair since you rinse it out, the chance of exposure is low, but cats are particularly sensitive to peppermint oil. Even breathing the aroma of peppermint oil can cause shortness of breath and increased heart rate. Again, since you're rinsing it out and it's a very small amount in the shampoo, I feel the chance of there being a problem is small, but I would be careful, maybe changing the time your wash your hair to earlier in the day so the scent will have dissipated by bedtime. Rosemary can also be toxic to cats though I haven't been able to find any further information about how toxic it may be.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Boop by Petco. As long as your cat doesn't eat/drink an excessive amount of this shampoo, she should be just fine. And as long as you didn't get any into her eyes, she should be OK. In the future, it is not recommended to use human shampoos on animals - there are special animal shampoos that are not as irritating if gotten into the eyes, and nontoxic if consumed. I recommend monitoring for any vomiting, diarrhea, decreased appetite, or any neurologic signs such as tremors or seizures. These could indicate a toxicity. If she is squinting her eyes, this could mean you got shampoo in her eyes and caused damage to her corneas. If you see any of these signs, she should be seen by a veterinarian right away. Once the Raid is dried and absorbed into the environment / objects, Chloe should not be in any significant danger of permethrin toxicity. In theory, if she were to find an area that didn't dry and lapped enough of it up, it could certain cause a toxic episode. If you are concerned about this, I would recommend bringing Chloe inside but perhaps secluding her to areas that are not sprayed. If this is possible, it's probably your safest bet.

As long as the pesticide was completely dried, and you wait the recommended amount of time before entering the house again, your cats should be fine and there should be minimal to no risk of them getting pesticide on their fur :-)

I did research the name, and I could not find any information about it being toxic to cats. I suspect that if it was causing problems, it would have come up on my veterinary database. However, I am not a big fan of essential oils in cats. They do not tolerate them as well as dogs do. So, I would not use it again in my cats to be on the safe side. I think that they are going to be just fine. If they did start to show irritation - you will need to bathe in Dawn dish soap to get the oil off. It can be irritating to the skin and irritating to the stomach if a lot is ingested, but wouldn't be toxic beyond that. You can just rinse the areas that had contact with the cleaner with normal water. Flush the area for a minute and continue to keep her off of the carpet until it dries and she should be fine.
