My dog is terrified of baths. How do I help his bath time anxiety?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi! So my dog HATES baths. I talk to him VERY gently and make it as likeable as I possibly can. I tried to feed him a couple of treats while he was in the bath, but he just kept in shaking and refused to eat it. The water is about Luke warm, maybe slightly warmer, and the water is about up to the top of his legs. He's fairly small, the size of a miniature poodle, and so I use one side of our sink. The owners before us where not nice about the baths, and that most likely the problem. Thanks!

I’m sorry to hear about your dog. It is possible that his former owners treatment of bath time may have given him anxiety about it. It sounds like you’re doing everything right but if his anxiety is still severe, talk to your veterinarian about an occasional use anti-anxiety medication which can help tremendously with feeling more relaxed at bath time. Hope this helps and best of luck to you and your boy!
