My dog hit a mailbox. Why is he hunched and won't walk or jump?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 5 lbs

My 6 year old chichiwowa charged our the II Idoor and hit the mail box. Only thing I seen to be wrong was a bruise on his front right leg. He went about his business. Next day seemed ok . That next night he.would not jump on the bed. When I call him to me He hunches down and only wants to BACK UP.. He had to be carried outside to go potty because he would NOT walk out the door. NOT SURE WHAT'S WRONG...

Poor Zo! In addition to bruising of his front leg, Zo may have injured his back and neck while running into the mailbox. It is quite common for dogs with back/neck injuries to show a hunched gait and reluctance jumping, even a few days after the initial injury. It sounds as though he is quite painful, so I recommend taking Zo to his vet for evaluation so that the best course of treatment can be started. Do not give him any over the counter pain medications at home, as these (including aspirin) cause more harm than good. I hope this helps and that Zo feels better soon!
