Is low VOC paint truly safe for my birds during home painting?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Male | unneutered

I read from a Vet on Internet Site, about Canaries and Paint. It read "Some paints have zinc, esp. the whites. Painting has fumes, but you an buy "low, VOC paints" and the latex Interior paints are safe to use even in the presence of birds. VOC stands for: 'Low - Volatile Organic Compounds". I wanted to check with your Vet's., first, before painting, in three Other rooms.

A low VOC paint still has VOCs. The low level may not pose an issue in larger, well ventilated rooms however, if the bird room is small I would still recommend moving the cage. Wait until you can no longer detect any paint odor then move the cage back. Monitor for lethargy, tail bobbing when breathing, decreased appetite or trouble perching.
