Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 5 years and 1 month old | 20 lbs

My smallish dog (abt 20 lbs) is ahowu g signs of pain and tenderness in belly (lower). We noticed this around 6 pm. He yelped when ww touched his belly firmly, ge was panting and quivering a little to moderately off and on. No vomiting no diarrhea, ate dinner ok at 5 pooped 3 timed sice then (normal). I scheduled him appointment tomorrow online at our local vet. He is now resting and calmer but doesn't want to really be touched. Can he have any meds now, such as a pepto bismol or tramadol ?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I see this sort of thing quite commonly in small dogs and the question always is: is it stomach pain or back pain. These little guys can easily hurt their backs and so they tense their abdominal muscles. They also don’t want you to touch them for fear it might tweak their back even more. Because we don’t know yet, I’d refrain from giving anything tonight as we don’t want to interfere with whatever your vet decides to give tomorrow. Tramadol is a safe pain medication but it can slow the GI tract so let’s skip it for now. For tonight, just let Rigby rest alone. Best of luck to you and Rigby!
